Most China guides are written for tourists or for consultants. This checklist is built for the person who has to actually get something done: get through the practicalities, and not waste the evenings.
Five checkpoints, earliest first. Every item ends either in a link to the official source or in a note on why it matters. The order is deliberate — each checkpoint unlocks the next one.

These three are the only items that can stop you at the gate.
Cash still works, but China runs on Alipay and WeChat Pay. Bind a card to both before you leave: binding fails for some issuing banks, and you want to discover that on your sofa, not in the arrivals hall.
Everything here needs to be working before you land — airport Wi-Fi is not the place to debug a payment app.
We do not give visa determinations or tax advice. Rules change and your case is specific: use the official channels in Step 3, or ask us and we will tell you honestly whether you need a professional.
416 places across 10 cities, each with verified WGS84 coordinates that work in Google Maps and Apple Maps without the usual China offset. Filter by how much time you have, save what you like, and it works offline once loaded.
Covered cities are live in the city guides — more are added as we verify them. Scroll (or drag) to zoom and pan: Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou sit close together on the map.
Tell us the cities and the dates. We will tell you honestly what needs a local, and what you can do alone.
